Eschatology

The word “eschatology” is derived from the Greek word eschatos which means “last” or “end”. It is used for descriptions of the end times. Eschatology is important in the New Testament, but also plays a part in the Old Testament.

Eschatology in the New Testament

In the New Testament the expectation of the end times plays an important part. In almost all New Testament texts, the following ideas are important:

  • the Kingdom of God will come imminently;
  • God will then judge the world;
  • only those people who have lived according to God’s requirements, will escape God’s judgement;
  • they will live on in a new, eternal world.

The End will Come Soon

According to the oldest texts in the New Testament, the end of time was thought to be coming within the next few years (see for example Mark 13:30; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11). This is thought to be the reason that Jesus did in fact speak frequently about the imminent coming of God’s Kingdom.
