Christians

“Christians” (christianoi in Greek) is the name given to the followers of Jesus Christ. The word is used only three times in the New Testament. It is possible that it started off as a derogatory term used by non-Christians, which was later adopted as a positive name by the Christian community.

Acts on “Christians”

According to Acts 11:26, the name emerged halfway through the first century AD in Antioch. In Acts 9:2, the followers of Jesus are called “followers of the Way”. In Acts 26:28, King Agrippa II also uses the word “Christian” in a conversation with Paul,

“In this short time do you think you will make me a Christian?

Roman Sources

The term “Christian” is also mentioned in Roman texts. Pliny the Younger (Epistles 10.96) and Tacitus (Annals 15.44) use the Latin word christianos to indicate followers of Jesus.
