Belial

In the New Testament, Belial is a name for Satan, the king of lawlessness.

Belial in the Old Testament

Belial is a Hebrew word that means “worthless”, “lawless” or “debauched”. People who behave immorally are sometimes called “sons of belial” (that is, “sons of lawlessness”, “lawless people”) in the Old Testament.

Belial in the New Testament

In Jewish texts from the time of the Bible, Belial is also mentioned a few times. There, the name is often accidentally written as “Beliar”. In these texts, Belial or “Beliar” is a name for Satan, the king of lawlessness. The New Testament uses Belial in the same way (see 2 Corinthians 6:15, ESV). In 2 Thessalonians 2:3 (ESV), Satan is called “the man of lawlessness”, which is effectively a translation of Belial.
