How Many Archangels are There?
There are various traditions concerning the precise number of archangels. The number seven is often mentioned. According to the book of Enoch they are named Uriel, Raphael, Raguel, Michael, Sariel, Gabriel and Ramiel. Of these seven, only Michael and Gabriel feature in the biblical canon
Functions of the Archangels
- In the Bible, Michael appears as commander of the heavenly armies that fight against the demonic powers
at the end of time (see Daniel 10:13 ; Revelation 12:7 ). - Gabriel is the angel who explains secrets and prophecies in Daniel 8:16
and Daniel 9:21 . He is also the one who announces the births of John the Baptist and Jesus in Luke 1:26-38 . - The archangel Raphael is described in the Deuterocanonical book of Tobit. God sends him to Tobit and his son Tobias to help them.
