Amram

Amram is the father of Moses, Aaron and Miriam. Like his wife Jochebed, he belongs to the tribe of Levi.

The Name Amram

The name Amram means “superior people” and refers to the people of Israel who were living in Egypt.
Amram belongs to the tribe of Levi, like his wife Jochebed, who is also his aunt (Exodus 6:20). Together they have three children: Miriam, Aaron and Moses.

The Birth of Moses

When their younger son is born, Amram and Jochebed hide him for three months. They do this because the pharaoh has commanded that all the baby boys of the people of Israel should be thrown into the Nile.
After three months, Jochebed places her baby boy in a basket made of papyrus, and sets him down among the reeds on the bank of the Nile. There, an Egyptian princess finds him and adopts him as her son and calls him Moses.

Father of Aaron, Moses and Miriam

There are no other stories about Amram in the Bible, but his name does occur in genealogical lists to show who belongs to which family. In these lists, Amram is identified as the father of Aaron, Moses and Miriam (Numbers 26:59).
