Abner

Abner is related to Saul and is the commander of his army. After Saul’s death, he commands the army of Saul’s son Ishbosheth. Abner is killed by Joab, David’s army commander, after he went to see David to negotiate peace.

The Name Abner

The name Abner means “my father is Ner”. According to 1 Samuel 14:50, Ner, Abner’s father, was one of Saul’s uncles and they were therefore cousins. According to 1 Chronicles 9:39, Ner was Saul’s grandfather and Abner was Saul’s uncle.
