Abel

Abel is the second son of Adam and Eve and the brother of Cain. Abel is murdered by his brother Cain, but God notices the blood of Abel. The blood of Abel in the New Testament refers to righteous people who died even though they were innocent.

The Name Abel

The name Abel means “brief” or “light breeze”. Abel is the second son of Adam and Eve, and the younger brother of Cain.

Abel and Cain

Abel is a shepherd. He brings an offering to God. For this he chooses the best animal out of his flock.
God notices the offering of Abel, but does not see the offering of his brother Cain. Therefore, Cain gets angry with Abel and kills him. The blood of Abel vanishes into the ground, but God notices this and calls his brother Cain to account (Genesis 4:10).

An Empty Place

Abel leaves behind an empty place for his mother Eve. When his younger brother Seth is born, Eve sees Seth as the son that God has given her in place of Abel.

The Blood of Abel

The New Testament refers to the “blood of Abel” in various places (Matthew 23:35; Luke 11:51; Hebrews 12:24). The blood of Abel is the symbol for all the righteous people from the Old Testament who died even though they were innocent.
The death of Abel is often used by artists to refer to the death of Jesus.
