Oil Lamp

The oil lamp was one of the most important items in a household. It was an oblong earthenware dish which was filled with olive oil. A wick, usually manufactured from a twisted strip of linen, was placed in the oil. The wick would absorb oil and then it would be lit. As the wick burned down it needed to be trimmed.
