Since the creation of the universe, the image of light against darkness runs through history like a golden thread. God spoke and there was light, and he separated the light from the darkness. Since then, the two have always been in opposition to one another, always in contrast. Light is equated with life, brightness, clarity, insight, knowledge and understanding; while darkness is synonymous with gloominess, uncertainty, despair and depression.
Isaiah announced that the light would come into the world, “Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress” (Isaiah 9:1). In the Gospel of John we read, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:4-5)
Jesus said it himself to the people, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). And then, Christ instructs his children to be a part of banishing darkness from the world. “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” (Ephesians 5:8)
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
Right now, wherever you find yourself, you are chosen to be the candle that brings light into a dark room, to drive out the darkness. You have been given the command to bring life, certainty, love and hope.
