Jesus appears to 7 disciples
1After Jesus had talked to Thomas, He appeared again to his disciples at the Lake of Tiberias. This is how it happened: 2There were 7 disciples together. They were Simon-Peter, Thomas the Twin, Nathanael from the town of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, James and John, and 2 other disciples. 3Simon-Peter said to them: ‘I am going to catch fish.’ They said to him: ‘We will go with you.’
They got into the boat and they went into the water. They did not catch any fish that night. 4The next morning, very early, Jesus was standing on the beach but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5Jesus said to them: ‘My friends, did you catch any fish to eat?’ They said to Him: ‘No, nothing.’ 6Jesus said to them: ‘You must throw your fishing net out on the right hand side of the boat, then you will catch fish.’
They threw the fishing net into the water on the right hand side and there were so many fish in the net that they could not pull the net into the boat. 7The disciple that Jesus loved very much said to Peter: ‘That is the Lord.’
When Simon-Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his cloak (because he did not have on all his clothes). He jumped into the water and went to Jesus. 8The other disciples came in the boat and they pulled the fishing net that was full of fish behind them. They were not far from the beach, about 200 cubits. 9When the disciples in the boat came to the beach, they saw the burning coals of a fire and fish and bread on the coals. 10Jesus said to them: ‘Bring some of the fish that you have caught.’
11Simon-Peter climbed into the boat and he pulled the fishing net onto the beach. The net was full of big fish. There were 153 fish in the net, but the net did not tear. 12Jesus said to them: ‘Come and eat breakfast.’
The disciples did not ask Him who He was but they knew that it was the Lord. 13Jesus took the bread and He gave it to them. He also gave them some of the fish. 14This was the 3rd time that Jesus appeared to his disciples after He had died and God had raised Him and made Him live again.
Jesus talks to Peter
15When the disciples had finished eating breakfast, Jesus said to Simon-Peter: ‘Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than the other disciples love Me?’ Peter said: ‘Yes, Lord, You know that I love You.’
Jesus said to him: ‘You must feed my sheep. You must care for my people.’
16Jesus asked him the 2nd time: ‘Simon, son of John, do you love Me?’ Peter said to Him: ‘Yes, Lord, You know that I love You.’
Jesus said to him: ‘Then you must be a shepherd to my people.’
17Jesus asked Peter the 3rd time: ‘Simon, son of John, do you love Me?’ Peter was sad because Jesus had asked him 3 times if he loved Him. He said to Jesus: ‘Lord, You know everything. You know that I love you.’
Jesus said to him: ‘Then you must take care of my people. 18Peter, I tell you this and it is sure: When you were young, you tied your own clothes and you went where you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will hold out your hands and someone else will tie you. Then they will take you where you do not want to go.’
19(When Jesus said this, He told Peter how he, Peter, would die and how he would honour God). Then Jesus said to Peter: ‘Come with Me.’
Jesus and the disciple that Jesus loved very much
20Peter looked back and he saw that the disciple that Jesus loved very much was following them. (It was the same disciple who had sat next to Jesus when they were eating and who had asked Jesus: ‘Lord, who is the one who will betray You?’)
21When Peter saw the disciple that Jesus loved very much, he said to Jesus: ‘Lord, what will happen to him?’ 22Jesus said to Peter: ‘If I want him to live until I come, you don't have to worry about that. I told you to follow Me.’
23The disciples thought that this disciple that Jesus loved very much would never die. But they were wrong. Jesus did not say that this disciple would not die. Jesus said to Peter: ‘If I want him to live until I come, you don't have to worry about that.’
24The disciple that Jesus loved very much was the disciple who told all of this and who wrote it all in this book. We know that he told the truth. 25Jesus did a lot of other things, but you do not read about them all in this book. If people wanted to write all of those things, then I don't think there would be enough place in the world for all those books.
