The silver trumpets
1The Lord said to Moses: 2‘You must make 2 silver trumpets. Make them from silver that you have beaten with a hammer. You must use the trumpets to call the congregation to come together and also to tell the Israelites when they must go further. 3If they blow both the trumpets, then all the people of the congregation must come to you and come together at the tent where I appear to the Israelites. 4If they blow only one trumpet, then the leaders_of_Israel must come to you.
5If they blow the trumpets loudly, the Israelites in the camp east of the tent of the Lord must start to move. 6If they blow them loudly for the 2nd time, the people in the camp south of the tent of the Lord must start moving. You must blow the trumpets very loudly when the people must go further. 7You must blow the trumpets to call the congregation to come together, but then you must not blow them loudly. 8The sons of Aaron, the priests, must blow the trumpets. You and your descendants must always do this.
9When there are enemies that come into your land to make war_against you or to oppress you, then you must blow the trumpets loudly. The Lord your God will remember you and He will save you from your enemies. 10When you want to celebrate your feasts and on the first day of the month, you must blow the trumpets at your burnt-offerings and your meal-offerings, and your God will remember to be good to you. I am the Lord your God.’
The Israelites go out of the Sinai Desert
11The cloud went up from the tent where the 10 commandments were. It was on the 20th day of the 2nd month in the 2nd year. 12The Israelites went out of the Sinai Desert. They went further until the cloud stopped in the Paran Desert. 13They went further again when the Lord told them to go.
14The camp of Judah went first. They walked in front with their flag. Nahshon, son of Amminadab, was the leader of the Judah group. 15Nethanel, son of Zuar, was the leader of the Issachar group. 16Eliab, son of Helon, was the leader of the Zebulun group. 17They took down the tent of the Lord and the Gershon family and Merari family carried the tent and also went.
18Then the Reuben group went with their flag, and then all the people who were with them in the camp. Elizur, son of Shedeur, was the leader of the Reuben group. 19Shelumiel, son of Zurishaddai, was the leader of the Simeon group. 20Eliasaph, son of Deuel, was the leader of the Gad group. 21Then the Kohath family went. They carried the holy things. The priests put the tent of the Lord up at the new camp before the Kohath family got there.
22Then the Ephraim group went with their flag, and then the people who were with them in the camp. Elishama, son of Ammihud, was the leader of the Ephraim group. 23Gamaliel, son of Pedahzur, was the leader of the Manasseh group. 24Abidan, son of Gideoni, was the leader of the Benjamin group.
25The last flag was always the flag of the Dan camp. They carried their flag and then came all the people who were in the camp with them. Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai, was the leader of the Dan group. 26Pagiel, son of Okran, was the leader of the Asher group.
27Ahira, son of Enan, was the leader of the Naphtali group. 28This is how the Israelites went in groups when they went further.
Moses asks Hobab to go with them
29Moses had a father-in-law. His name was Reuel, and his son's name was Hobab. When they were in the land of Midian, Moses said to Hobab: ‘We are going to the land that the Lord has promised to give us. You must come with us. We will be good to you because the Lord has promised that He will be good to us.’ 30Hobab said to Moses: ‘No, I want to go back to my land and my family. I do not want to go with you.’ 31Then Moses said to him: ‘Please come with us, and don't go away from us. You know where we can put up our tents in the desert, so you must lead us. 32If you go with us, we will also give you some of the good things that the Lord will give us.’
The covenant box goes in front of the Israelites
33The Israelites went away from the mountain of the Lord. They walked further for 3 days and the covenant box of the Lord went in front of them for 3 days. They were looking for a place where they could stay. 34When the Israelites went out of the camp to go further, the cloud of the Lord stayed over them in the day. 35Every time the covenant box and the people started to go further, Moses said:
‘Lord, you must rise,
and your enemies must run away.
People who do not love You
must run away and flee.’
36And when the covenant box stayed in one place, Moses said:
‘Lord of 10s of thousands of Israelites,
You must come back.’
