Sin-offerings
1The Lord said to Moses: 2‘You must tell the Israelites that when someone sins_against one of the commandments of God, when he does something that he may not do, but he does not know that he is sinning, then you must do this:
3If it is the anointed priest who has sinned and made the people guilty, then he must sacrifice a healthy bull to the Lord as a sin-offering. 4He must bring the bull to the entrance of the tent where the Lord appears to the Israelites. He must put his hand on the head of the bull and he must kill the bull in front of the tent of the Lord. 5Then the anointed priest must take some of the blood of the bull to the tent of the Lord. 6He must put his finger in the blood and sprinkle the blood 7 times in front of the curtain of the holy room. 7He must put some of the blood on the horns of the incense-altar in front of the Lord in the tent and then he must pour out all the blood that is left over at the bottom of the burnt-offering altar, in front of the tent. 8He must take the fat from the bull which is the sin-offering, all the fat on the inner parts, 9the 2 kidneys with the fat at the lower parts of the back and the fat of the liver that he took out with the kidneys. 10He must do the same as he always does with an animal for a meal-offering and he must burn it on the burnt-offering altar. 11But he must take everything from the bull, its skin, all of its meat, its head, legs, inner parts and its dung, 12to a pure place outside of the camp, where they throw away the ashes, and he must burn it there in a fire.’
When all the people sin
13The Lord said to Moses: ‘If all the Israelites have sinned, but they did not know that they were sinning, and if they have done something wrong against one of the commandments of God, something that they may not do, then they are all guilty. 14When they find out that they have sinned, the congregation must sacrifice a bull for a sin-offering. They must bring the bull to the tent of the Lord. 15The leaders of the congregation must put their hands on the head of the bull before the Lord and they must kill the bull.
16The anointed priest must take some of the blood of the bull into the tent of the Lord. 17He must put his finger into the blood and sprinkle some of the blood 7 times before the curtain in front of the Lord. 18Then he must take some of the blood and put it on the horns of the altar in front of the Lord, in the tent of the Lord. He must pour out all the blood that is left over at the bottom of the burnt-offering altar, in front of the tent. 19He must take all the fat of the bull and burn it on the altar. 20He must do the same with this bull as with the first bull. This is how he must make atonement for the people in the congregation, so that God will forgive them. 21He must take the bull out of the camp and burn it, like the first bull. This is a sin-offering for the congregation.’
When a leader sins
22‘If it is a leader who has sinned, and has done something against one of the commandments of the Lord his God, but he did not know that he had sinned, then he is guilty. 23When he finds out that he has sinned, he must sacrifice a healthy goat-ram. 24He must put his hand on the head of the goat and kill it at the same place where they kill the animals for burnt-offerings for the Lord. This is a sin-offering. 25The priest must put some of the blood of the sin-offering from the goat on his finger and put it on the horns of the burnt-offering altar. He must pour out all the blood that is left over at the bottom of the burnt-offering altar. 26Then he must burn all the fat of the goat on the altar, like the fat for the meal-offering. This is how the priest must make atonement for the sin of the leader and God will forgive him.’
When other people sin
27‘If it is one of the other people who sins but he does not know that he is sinning and he does something against one of the commandments of God, then he is guilty. 28When he finds out that he has sinned, he must sacrifice a healthy goat ewe for the sin that he has done. 29He must put his hand on the ewe's head and kill it at the same place where they kill the animals for burnt-offerings. 30The priest must put some of the ewe's blood on his finger and he must put it on the horns of the burnt-offering altar. He must pour out all the blood that is left over at the bottom of the altar. 31He must take all the fat from the ewe like the fat of the animals for the meal-offerings and he must burn it on the altar. This offering pleases Me. This is how the priest makes atonement for the person and God will forgive him.
32If the person gives a sheep for a sin-offering, he must give a healthy sheep ewe. 33He must put his hand on the ewe's head and kill it at the same place where they kill the animals for burnt-offerings. 34The priest must put some of the ewe's blood on his finger and he must put it on the horns of the burnt-offering altar. He must pour out all the blood that is left over at the bottom of the altar. 35He must take all the fat from the ewe like the fat of the sheep for the meal-offering and he must burn it on the altar, with the fire-offerings for the Lord. This is how the priest makes atonement for the sin that a person has done and God will forgive him.’
