1This is how God made heaven and earth and everything in it.
The 7th day — God rests
2God finished all his work and on the 7th day He did not work. He rested. 3God blessed the 7th day. He made it a holy day because He rested after He had finished all his work. 4This is how heaven and earth was made.
God makes a man and a woman
When the Lord God made the heaven and earth, 5there were no plants or trees in the fields on earth, because the Lord God had not given rain on earth and there were no people to work in the ground. 6There was mist that came up from the ground and it made the ground wet.
7Then the Lord God took dust from the ground and from the dust He made a man. God breathed into the man and the man started breathing. He started to live.
The Garden of Eden
8Then the Lord God made a garden in Eden. This was a place in the east. He put the man in the garden to live there.
9The Lord God planted many kinds of trees in the ground. The trees were beautiful and their fruit was good to eat. In the middle of the garden He planted the tree_of_life. He planted the tree of understanding what is good and what is bad.
10A river flowed from Eden to give water to the garden. There were 4 rivers that flowed from this river. 11The first river was the Pishon River. It flowed around the land of Havilah. 12There was good gold in that land, and balm and onyx stones. 13The 2nd river was the Gihon River which flowed around the land of Cush. 14The 3rd river was the Tigris River which flowed east of the land of Ashur and the 4th river was the Euphrates River.
15Then the Lord God put the man in the Garden of Eden to live there and to work in the garden.
The tree in the middle of the garden
16The Lord God said to the man: ‘You may eat fruit from any tree in the garden. 17But you may not eat the fruit from the tree that can make you understand what is right and what is wrong. If you eat that fruit, you will die. This is sure, and it will happen.’
18Then the Lord God said: ‘It is not good for the man to live alone. I will make someone to help him.’
19Then the Lord God made all the animals and the birds. He made them from the ground. Then He said that they must come to the man and He said the man must give a name to each animal. That is how the animals got their names. 20The man gave names to all the animals, birds and wild animals, but he did not find someone who could help him and live with him. 21Then the Lord God made the man sleep. He took out one of the man's ribs from his chest. The Lord closed the place where He took out the rib. 22The Lord made a woman from the man's rib and He said she must go to the man. 23Then the man said:
‘Here is a person like me.
She is part of my body,
and she was made from me.
She comes from man,
and that is why her name will be Woman.’
24That is why a man will go away from his father and mother. He will live with his wife and the 2 people will be like one person.
25The man and his wife did not wear any clothes. They were naked but they did not think it was wrong, and they did not feel ashamed.
