The Israelites defeated King Og and took his land
1Moses said: ‘We went further to the land of Bashan. King Og of Bashan and all his men came to attack us and we started to fight in the town of Edrei. 2The Lord said to me: “Do not be afraid of King Og because I will help you defeat him and all his people. You must take his land as you did from King Sihon of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon.”
3The Lord our God made us defeat King Og of Bashan and all his people. We defeated them and not one of them was left_alive. 4We then took all his cities. There was not one city that we did not take. There were 60 cities, all of the land of Argob where Og of Bashan was king. 5All these cities had strong and high walls and there were strong doors and locks at the gates. We also took many towns. 6We killed all the people in the cities and towns, all the men, women and children, as we did with the people of King Sihon of Heshbon. 7But we took the cattle and everything in the cities for ourselves.’
The Israelites defeated the 2 Amorite kings
8Moses said: ‘That is how we took the land of the 2 Amorite kings on the eastern side of the Jordan River, from the Arnon Valley to Mount Hermon. 9The Sidonian people gave another name to Mount Hermon. They named it Mount Sirion, and the Amorites named it Mount Senir.
10We took all the cities and towns on the Highveld and all of the land of Gilead and Bashan to the cities of Salekah and Edrei. There were 2 cities of King Og in the land of Bashan. 11King Og of Bashan was the only one of the Rephaite people who was still_alive. His bed is still in the Ammonite town of Rabbah where people can see it. It is made of iron and is 9 cubits long and 4 cubits wide.’
Moses divided the land east of the Jordan River
12Moses said: ‘I gave part of the land that we took to the tribes of Reuben and Gad. It was the land between the town of Aroer near the Arnon Valley and half of the Gilead Mountains and the towns on the mountains. 13I gave the other half of the Gilead Mountains and all of the land of Bashan to the half tribe of Manasseh. Long ago Bashan was the land of Og. It was all the land of Argob, all the land of Bashan that had the name of the land of the Rephaite people. 14Jair, son of Manasseh, took all the land of Argob to the borders of the lands of Geshur and Maakah. He changed the name of the land of Bashan and he named it after his name and said it was Havvoth-Jair and that is still its name today. 15I gave the land of Gilead to Makir 16and to the tribes of Reuben and Gad. I gave them the land from Gilead to the middle of the Arnon Valley and the land next to the Jabbok Valley. This is the border of the land of the Ammonites. 17I also gave them the Jordan Valley, the Jordan River and the land next to the river. It was from the Kinnereth Lake to the lake in the Jordan Valley, the Salt Sea. This was on the other side of the Pisgah Mountains on the eastern side.
18I told the people of Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh: “The Lord your God has given this land to you to live in, but all your men who can go to war must go through the Jordan River and lead the other Israelites. 19Only your wives, children and animals may stay here in the towns that I have given you. I know you have a lot of animals. 20Your men must go and fight with the other Israelites until the Lord has also helped them defeat all of their enemies and they can take the land that the Lord your God gives them, the land west of the Jordan River. Then you can come back to the land that I gave you. Each one can go to his own field.”
21And I said to Joshua: “You have seen everything that God has done to those 2 kings. You will now go through the Jordan River to the other kings. The Lord will do the same to those kings. 22Do not be afraid of them because the Lord your God, Himself, will fight for you. He will help you.” ’
The Lord told Moses not to go through the Jordan River
23Moses said: ‘Then I begged the Lord and asked Him: 24“Lord, my God, you showed me how big and strong You are. There is no other God in heaven or on earth who can do the great things that You do. 25Please let me also go through the Jordan River so that I can see the good land on the other side of the river, this beautiful mountain land and Mount Lebanon.”
26But because the Lord had become angry with you, He was also angry with me and He did not give me what I asked for. He said to me: “It is enough. Do not talk to Me about this again. 27You may stand on Mount Pisgah and you may look to the west, to the north, to the south and to the east, but you will not go through the Jordan River. 28You must tell Joshua what to do and you must make him strong and brave, because he is the one who will lead the people over the Jordan River. He will give this land that you see to them to live in.”
29Then we stayed there in the valley on the other side of the town of Beth-Peor.’
