Animals that get lost
1Moses said: ‘If an ox or a sheep of another Israelite gets lost and you see the animal, then you may not keep quiet. You must take the animal back to its owner. You have to do it. 2If the other Israelite lives too far or you do not know who the owner is, then the animal must stay with you at your home until its owner starts looking for it. Then you must take the animal back to its owner. 3You must also do this when a donkey, or clothes or anything else of an Israelite gets lost and you find it. You may not keep quiet.’
Animals that have fallen
4‘If you see that the donkey or ox of an Israelite has fallen and is lying on the road, then you may not look away or say that you did not see it. You must help the animal get up and stand. You have to do it.’
Men and women's clothes
5‘Women may not wear men's clothes and men may not wear women's clothes. The Lord your God hates people who do that.’
Birds' nests
6‘If you see a bird's nest in a tree or on the ground and the mother is sitting on the nest, on baby birds or on eggs, you may not take the mother with the babies or with the eggs. 7You may take the babies or the eggs, but you have to leave the mother. You must do this so that all will be well with you and you will have a long and happy life.’
A fence around the roof
8‘When you build a new house, you must build a fence around the sides of the roof. If you don't do that, someone can fall off the roof and then you will be guilty if he dies.’
Other plants in a vineyard
9‘You may not sow other plants in your vineyard. If you do that then you consecrate to the Lord all the fruit of your vineyard, the grapes and all the fruit of the plants that you have sown. Then you have to give everything to the Lord.’
Things that may not go together
10‘You may not use a cow and a donkey together to pull the same plough.
11You may not wear clothes made of 2 different kinds of material like wool and linen.
12You must sew tassels on the 4 corners of your cloak.’
Laws about sex
13‘If a man has married a woman and he has had sex with her, but later he does not like his wife anymore, what must he do? 14If he accuses her and says bad things about her and says that after he married her he found out that she was not a virgin, 15then the woman's mother and father must go and show the leaders at the gate of the town that their daughter was a virgin. 16The father of the wife must say to the leaders: “I have given my daughter to this man to be his wife, but he does not like her anymore. 17He accuses her and says that she was not a virgin. But here I am showing you that she was a virgin.” Then the parents must show the woman's cloak on which she and her husband slept the first night. 18Then the leaders of that town must punish the man. 19He must pay 100 shekels of silver and they must give the money to the father of the wife because the man said bad things about a young woman of Israel. The man must keep the woman as his wife. He may never divorce her.
20But if what the man said is true, and if they find out that the woman was not a virgin, 21then they must bring the woman to her father's house and the men from the town must throw stones at her and kill her. She has done something bad, and she has brought shame to the people of Israel. She had sex with other men while she was living in her father's house. You must take away everything that is bad among the people.
22If a man is having sex with another man's wife and someone sees them, then they must die, both the man and the woman who had sex with him. You must take away everything that is bad among the people of Israel.
23When a young girl is engaged to a man but she meets another man in town and he has sex with her, 24then you must bring them both to the gate of that town and you must throw stones at them and kill them. The girl must die because she did not shout_loudly to call other people for help, and the man must die because he had sex with the wife of another man. You must take away everything that is bad among the people of Israel.
25But if a man meets a girl in the field who is engaged, and he rapes her, then only he must die. 26Do not punish the girl because she has not done anything wrong. She must not die. It is the same if someone attacks and murders another man. 27The man has attacked the girl in the field and maybe she shouted and asked someone to help her, but there was no one to help her.
28If a man meets a girl who is not engaged and he grabs her and has sex with her, 29then the man must pay 50 pieces_of_silver to the girl's father and he must marry the girl. He may never divorce her because he raped her.
30A man may not marry his father's wife. A son may not have sex with a woman who has slept with his father.’
